Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the best world’s universityThe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has topped the list of world’s best universities, annual QS World University Rankings 2016-2017 revealed on Tuesday.

The rankings are published by Quacquarelli Symonds, an organization specializing in education and study abroad.

It is the fifth year in a row that MIT has been named the world’s best university. In fact, two other positions in top-three are occupied by the U.S. universities with Stanford University and Harvard University in second and third place, respectively.

UK’s University of Cambridge lost its third place. Now it is on the fourth place - the lowest position since the launch of the rankings in 2004.

Among the universities form the Asia-Pacific the first came The National University of Singapore (NUS) in 12th place.

The rankings include 916 universities from 81 countries, with up to 33 countries featuring in the top 200. The U.S. dominated overall, with 48 institutions, ahead of the U.K. (30), Netherlands (12), Germany (11), Canada (9), Australia (9), Japan (8), China (7), France (5), Sweden (5), and Hong Kong (5).

The QS World University Rankings are based on four key pillars: research, teaching, employability and internationalization. The methodology consists of six indicators: academic reputation (40 percent), employer reputation (10 percent), faculty student ratio (20 percent), citations per faculty (20 percent), international students (5 percent), and international faculty (5 percent).
