Portugal's national football squad gains title of Euro 2016 champions

Portugal's national football squad gains title of Euro 2016 championsA Seleção delivered crushing blow to the hosts of the tournament in Euro 2016 final game. It was all the more hard to believe it as Portugal’s key player Ronaldo suffered some tough injury to the knee and had to leave the pitch on stretchers. It seemed France had had a huge advantage now; but it eventually turned otherwise.

Both Portugal and France kept clean sheets for 90 minutes, with not so many moments to remember for both of the squads. It took an extra time to break the ice. With Eder scoring at 108’, Les Bleus found themselves in quite an awkward position.

The dramatic struggle went on, with Deschamps’s men desperately trying to make it at least a tie; watching that must have been true heartache for the French fans. Within the last minute of the match, French midfielder Martial could have evened the odds with a powerful shot, but it was blocked just in time.

Fernando Santos, head coach of Portugal team said:

I've always said we’re a team. I never hide my thoughts – I always tell my players what’s on my mind. I've always told them we've got great talent but we need to fight more than our opponents, run more than them and be more focused than them. We have an amazing group. They’ve always believed what I told them: that we could win this. Wherever we’ve gone there have always been Portuguese fans. This lifted our souls. It’s hard to describe the players’ emotions – it’s incredible. Our skipper put in an immense effort; he has amazing team spirit. Twice he tried to get back on the pitch but him being there in the dressing room and on the bench was very important for us. He believed – just like myself – that tonight was our night.
