French Interior Minister Christoph Castagne earlier reported that 39 people were detained during the clashes.
"200 peaceful demonstrators are on the Champs Elysees. 1,500 violators outside the perimeter resort to clashes. Our police are already present and are repulsing attacks: there are 39 arrests already," the minister wrote on Twitter.
At the same time, local media reported on the use of water cannons and tear gas against demonstrators.
Automobile traffic on the Champs Elysees today is completely blocked, the city authorities mobilized about 5 thousand policemen.
Earlier, Paris authorities decided to close the Eiffel Tower for visitors due to the protest rally at the Champ de Mars. This is stated in a message posted on the site of the architectural monument.
'Protests will take place at Champ de Mars on Saturday, November 24, 2018. This event does not allow us to provide our visitors with the optimal security conditions. Therefore, it was decided to close the monument to the public on that day,' it said.
