The outcome of the U.S. midterm elections will have no impact on Japan-U.S. ties, the top Japanese government spokesman said Wednesday.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a press conference that the Japan-U.S. alliance has been "unshakable" and both the Republican Party and the Democratic Party share its importance.
"Therefore, we believe that the elections' results would not have a direct impact on the Japan-U.S. relations," he said.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe built rapport with Republican President Donald Trump even before his inauguration in January 2017.
The Democratic Party will retake a majority in the House of Representatives for the first time in eight years. The Republican Party, meanwhile, retained its majority in the Senate, resulting in a divided Congress.
