mir24.tvLess than 100.000 ethnic Hungarians live in Zakarpattia now, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs said after meeting his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto.
“The Ministers meeting at the OSCE is finished on a positive note. Had a pleasant discussion with Hungarian colleague Peter Szijjarto. There are not 150.000 ethnic Hungarians in Zakarpattia, and not even 100.000. People are leaving the region. Our joint task with Hungary is to support and help the citizens,” he wrote.
The Ukrainian-Hungarian relationship tensed after Ukraine adopted its education law, according to which, more classes are to be taught in Ukrainian. Previously all classes could be taught in the languages of ethnic minorities, but now there will be a quota. The decision was made as it will give the school children a better opportunity to obtain higher education in Ukraine, as it requires the knowledge of Ukrainian.
While other countries are coming to terms with the new law, Hungary refuses to give it a fair hearing. The country says it limits the rights of the ethnic minorities.
