The Synodus of Ecumenical Patriarchate took the anathema off Filaret, the Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate. Orthodoxia.info reported that, referring to its sources.
Yevstratiy Zorya, the press secretary of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate confirmed this via Facebook.
The Synodus also ruled to restore the canonical status of Makariy Maletich, the head of Ukraine's Autocephalous Church.
Previously, Filaret and Makariy asked the Ecumenical Patriarch respective requests.
When Ukraine gained independence in 1991, Filaret stood for the restoration of the Ukrainian Church's independence; in 1992, he joined the process of restoration of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate. During the Bishops Council of June 1992, Filaret was stripped of his orders in June 1992. In 1997, the Russian Orthodox Church subjected Filaret to an anathema, specifically for political reasons.
