Ukraine asks Switzerland to hand over frozen assets of former Ukrainian officials

The Swiss Federal Office of Justice Spokesman Folco Galli says that the ministry received “three aid inquiries from the Ukrainian government”. “I can confirm that the Federal Office of Justice has received three Ukrainian requests for mutual aid this summer regarding Viktor Yanukovych’s associates, but not the very former president. The Federal Office of Justice is studying these requests for compliance with formal requirements”, says Folco Galli.

To remind, in February this year the Swiss government ruled to freeze accounts of 20 Ukrainian citizens at banks of the Swiss Confederation, including those of Viktor Yanukovych and his son Alexander, Sergei Arbuzov, Nikolai Azarov and several other members of the former government. The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland said that frozen assets had made around 170 million Swiss francs ($193.7 million).

As previously reported, the General Prosecutor Office of Ukraine and The Basel Institute on Governance (Switzerland) made an agreement to assist with tracing and recovering assets stolen by former Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych and his inner circle.
