In the near future, Washington will officially claim it is to leave INF Treaty, otherwise known the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles
. Reuters wrote that on Friday, quoting an anonymous source in the White House.
'We’re going to announce the suspension,' a U.S. official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. A second U.S. official said the U.S. action would be 'reversible' if Russia came back into compliance during the six-month U.S. suspension. 'Then the U.S. would unsuspend,' the official said', the news agency reports.
Andrea Thompson, the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security stated the decision will be announced on February 2. 'We’ll have an announcement made, follow all the steps that need to be taken on the treaty to suspend our obligations with the intent to withdraw', she said as quoted by Reuters.
Last year, U.S. President Donald Trump said his country would leave the INF Treaty because Russia failed to live up to it and never provided the report.
The INF Treaty bans ground-based medium-range ballistic missiles that can carry nuclear warheads and have a range of between 500 and 5,000 kilometers (300 and 3,100 miles). The United States and the Soviet Union signed the accord in 1987.
