War in Donbas causes ecologic disaster: 5 natural reserves were destroyedUkrainian ecologists state that flooding mines, shelling chemical factories and exacerbation of sanitary-epidemiological situation create a real threat of the ecologic disaster. As a result of military actions, the territories of natural reserves in Donetsk and Lugansk regions have been destroyed, among them ‘Provalskii step’, ‘Stanichno-Luganskoe’, ‘Cretaceous flora’, the biggest part of the National natural reserve ‘Sacred mountains’ and regional landscape part of ‘Donetsk ridge’.

It was reported by the press service of the National Ecologic Centre of Ukraine.

‘Experts of the international charity organization (hereafter, MBO) ‘Ecology-Right-Human’ and the civil organization (hereafter, GO) ‘Bureau of ecologic investigations’, who research ecologic consequences of the war in the east of Ukraine, believe that the consequences of today’s event in the east of Ukraine will become problems for survival of the future generations,’ – it was informed.‘Unfortunately, in the war time Ukraine in fact does not pay attention to the issues of environment protection.

At the same time particular ecologic consequences appear to be the most long-term and require the largest efforts for their elimination in the future, – stated the Executive Director of the MBO ‘Ecology-Right-Human’ Elena Kravchenko, - During the international symposium ‘Human rights and environment in a new Ukraine: in the name of professor Svetlana Kravchenko’ that has been hold on 21 September in Lvov, lawyers from 13 countries urged lawyers-ecologists from around the world to make everything possible to stop Russian aggression in Ukraine.

’‘We realize that in some countries, including Russia, in the situation of limitations of freedom of speech and human rights, lawyers-ecologists opposing such aggression have been exposed to great risk. However, we hope for solidarity with lawyers-ecologists in this region and around the world for adoption of ideas on peace and mutual respect,’ – as mentioned in the statement of ecologists. ‘Scale of harm to environment on the territories in the war zone as well as transnational border influence still needs to be evaluated. It is clear now that the exaggerating ambitions of Russian leadership threaten biologic variety of ecologic systems, water resources and sustainable development in general. Flooding mines, shelling chemical factories causing emissions of chemical substances and exacerbation of sanitary-epidemiologic situation create a real threat of ecologic disaster,’ – experts noticed.

Research demonstrated that during military actions in Donbas a few groups of threats were spread out, among which, first of all, the pollution of ground and water resources, the increase in sick rate, the afforestration, the desertification and the destruction of landscape matter. ‘It is important to remember consequences related to the temporary loss of control by the state in regard to the violations and technologic processes as well: the flooding of mines and output of mine water to the surface, chemical and radiation pollution of water horizons, spreading of pathogenic microorganisms, destruction of the places of storage of dangerous substances,’ – stated by the ecologists.
