Spring Health CEO April Koh says she's now focused on harmonizing hypergrowth with mental health after dozens of employees quit

April Koh built a $2 billion mental-health startup, Spring Health, by age 29.

But current and former employees told us her hard-driving approach led dozens to quit.

Last week Koh appeared at the Slush tech conference, where she talked about her growth as a leader.

It's no secret that startup culture isn't exactly the picture of a healthy work-life balance. Employees often log long hours and are expected to maintain a work-first, always-on attitude. Then there's the lingering possibility that the company will fail, as many do.Still, some employees of Spring Health told Insider that when they joined, they expected something different. After all, the startup provides mental-health care as a corporate benefit to clients including General Mills, Pepsi, Bain & Company, and Instacart.Instead, dozens of former and current employees told Insider they experienced a pressure-cooker environment in which people worked nonstop a?? even through bouts of the coronavirus or during a partner's childbirth labor a?? because they believed it was expected of them. Many told us they were worn down by what they described as a dogged pursuit of growth by their chief executive, April Koh.
