Kyndryl, the spinoff of IBM's IT services arm, announced partnerships with Microsoft and VMware.

The Microsoft deal is a big bet on hybrid cloud for both, a senior Microsoft exec told Insider.

But both will need partnerships across the industry, including with IBM, AWS, and Google Cloud.

It's only been two short weeks since IBM officially finished spinning off its IT consulting business as a new standalone entity called Kyndryl, a publicly-traded company with 90,000 employees all on its own.And the firm has wasted no time in using its newfound freedom to court its former parent company's biggest rivals in cloud and cloud software: Last week, Kyndryl announced what it called a "landmark global strategic partnership" with Microsoft, focusing on helping customers adopt the hybrid cloud model, where they use a combination of data centers and cloud technologies. On Friday, Kyndryl's network got a little bigger as it announces two new partnerships with tech giants VMware and SAP. The VMware partnership focuses on helping customers manage their use of multiple cloud providers and update their business applications, while the SAP deal helps customers move to the Big Three cloud providers and manage their SAP applications.A The partnerships show early signs that IBM CEO Arvind Krishna's big bet on spinning off Kyndryl can live up to its promise, as firms that might hesitate to work with Big Blue's rivals are willing to cozy up to an independent IT services provider with a legacy tied to a legendary tech company.
