Coal reserves in Ukraine’s TPPs decrease to 2.1 million tonnesCoal reserves in warehouses Ukrainian thermal power plants for the period from October 26 to November 2 decreased by 2.4% - to 2.141 million tonnes from 2.194 million tonnes, Ukrenergo reported.

According to the report, the total volume of 1.064 million tonnes of fuel accounts for anthracite coal, which Ukraine falls short of. Its reserves decreased by 5.8% during said period.

At the same time 361,000 tonnes of anthracite coal is stored at Luhansk TPP, which operates separately from the Ukrainian power grid.

As of the end of September, coal stocks in Ukraine’s TPPs accounted for 1.8 million tonnes, while for successful passage of the heating season requires 3.2 million tonnes. Also, 15.517 bcm of gas was stored, with 19 bcm needed.

Supplies of South African coal for the needs of Ukraine’s TPPs which are experiencing an acute shortage of fuel due to the hostilities in Donbas, are expected in late November 2015.

Ukraine began to experience an acute shortage of thermal coal in the summer of 2014, when, as a result of hostilities, the government completely lost control over part of Donbas, where the majority of the mines is located.

More than 50% of Ukraine-produced electricity is generated by nuclear power plants, the rest is produced by TPPs operating.
