It was not immediately clear how many survived.

At least six survivors reported by aviation authorities, and a local mayor confirmed at least three passengers were found alive. The British Aerospace 146 short-haul plane, operated by a charter airline named LaMia, declared an emergency at 10 p.m. Monday (0300 GMT) because of an electrical failure.

The plane was carrying 72 passengers and nine crew members, aviation authorities said in a statement.

"Tonight it was reported that a plane coming from Viru Viru airport in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, which should have landed at Jose Maria Cordova, airport had gone off course," a Colombian rescue official, Mauricio Parodi, told reporters.
