After summing up the international tender the contract between Odessa City Administrative Council and Bavarian August Ridinger for gas plant construction in Odessa was signed on April 7, 1864. Area in Liteyny Lane (now - Gas Lane) was chosen as the construction site of the plant.

Thus, Odessa became one of the first cities in Ukraine where a gas plant was opened. The plant produced artificial gas, a mixture of hydrogen, methane and carbon monoxide. Glowing gas in Odessa was made from English coal, which was delivered by sea from Cardiff at rather low prices (later Donbass coal was used to produce artificial gas).

The plant produced 8,000 cubic meters of gas per day. This volume was enough for everyday lanterns lighting on the streets of Odessa. All technological equipment and iron pipes for gas distribution networks were completely supplied from abroad by foreign companies, and lampposts were cast in Odessa.

Old Stock Exchange (now Odessa City Council) was the first gasified building in Odessa. To this day the building of old Odessa Stock Exchange located on Duma Square is one of the best examples of public buildings in the style of classicism in Ukraine.

The city's gas pipelines reached 76 miles in length by 1887. Central part of Odessa (within Vneshny Boulevard - Staroportofrankovskaya, Novorybnaya, Belinsky, Lidersovsky Boulevard) was illuminated. Counsil, Catherine, Cathedral and Tiraspol squares, as well as Alexander Avenue and several bridges - Sabaneyev, Stroganov, Police and Novikov Bridge were illuminated years later.

More than 2,000 gas lanterns with a length of gas distribution networks of more than 80 kilometers were used in the street gas lighting of Odessa by 1913.
Odessa Gas History Museum was founded by Igor Uchytel, head of the board of Odessagas JSC.

“Before I came to Odessagas, the museum did not exist. And I must say that it was created in a very interesting way. When we reconstructed the gas system, we began to discover its unique antique parts and components. And this drew our attention to the fact that today the description and illustrations of these antique elements cannot be found even in literature!”, - said Igor Uchytel.

According to him, that moment the decision to collect these exhibits and to open a museum was made. "They searched through the archive, found various documents, including letters from mayors of Odessa, requesting permission to build a plant for the production of artificial gas. We have collected all these documents, letters and details for many years, after which they evolved into our museum. To this day it prospers, collects important rarities and forms the history of gasification of Odessa, " said Igor Uchytel.

Note. Igor Uchytel is one of the TOP 10 most influential people in Odessa region. He was awarded high state awards аor his active life position for the region and the country: twice a cavalier of the Order of the Odessa mayor G.G. Marazli, laureate of the Order of Merit and much more.
