Ukraine considers referendum in Catalonia illegitimate, - MFA

Ukraines Foreign Ministry considers the referendum on the independence of Catalonia to be illegitimate and is convinced that Spain will manage to solve internal political problems democratically. This was stated in the commentary for Interfax-Ukraine by the speaker of Foreign Ministry Mariana Betsa.
"Ukraine considers illegitimate the referendum held by the Catalan authorities on October 1, which was banned by the Constitutional Court of Spain because of its inconsistency with the Constitution of the state," the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
Mariana Betsa also noted Ukraine supports the readiness of Spanish government for political dialogue with parliamentary political forces to restore law and order and stability within the constitutional field of the country.
"We are convinced that Spain, as one of the leaders of democracy in the world, relying on a solid foundation of democratic traditions and values that once determined peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy and, subsequently, to NATO and EU membership, will solve all the pressing problems of the internal political life in a democratic way, "the Foreign Ministry spokesman added.

She also stressed that Ukraine stands for unconditional respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all the states of the world within the internationally recognized borders and their compliance with the fundamental principles and norms of international law.

As it was reported earlier the government of Catalonia reported that 90 percent of the voters supported the provinces independence from Spain.Almosthalf of Catalonias population (2.3 of 5.3 million people) voted on the Sundays referendum, which Madrid considers illegal. The voting kicked off in the morning amidst fights with law enforcers. The police blocked the polling stations, however, the Catalolnian leader Carles Puigdemont. Nearly 900 people were wounded, when the police opened fire, using rubber bullets.
