EU condemns detentions in Russia at protests against pension reform

The European Union condemned Russia for detaining people at the protests against the pension reform September 9, as the press office of the EU External Actions Service reports.
“These actions prevented the exercise of the freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly, which are fundamental human rights enshrined in the Russian constitution as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Likewise, the detention of a number of journalists undermines the freedom of expression; a free media is essential and must be protected,” the message says.

The EU expects the Russian authorities to fully obligate the international commitments, including within the European Council and OSCE, “to uphold these fundamental rights, and to release without delay the peaceful demonstrators and the journalists”.
Earlier, 839 people were detained in Russian in 33 cities. Mostly, the detentions took place in St. Petersburg (354) and Ekaterinburg (129). Moreover, a criminal proceeding was opened against one of the protesters.
