World media about Putin, Merkel meeting in Meseberg

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks near Berlin on August 18. After their meeting, the media burst out with various reactions on the results of the discussion.
The New York Times set off calling the two countries “frenemies.”
“The two countries could be described as the ultimate international “frenemies,” with economic, cultural and intellectual ties reaching back centuries. Since the 18th century, they have cycled through a series of conflicts and reconciliations, most recently World War II and the Cold War,” the agency noted.

According to NYT, both Germany and Russia have problems tied to Syria and common interest could bring the countries closer after a period of deteriorating relations:
“For Ms. Merkel, the issue is domestic. Her decision to allow more than one million people — most of them refugees from the war in Syria — to apply for asylum in Germany has been met with increasing resistance from the public and from her own government…For Mr. Putin, it is not being quite able to find a solution to Syria’s civil war.”

“Both leaders could benefit from finding a way to ensure sufficient political stability in Syria to allow Germany to begin encouraging refugees to return, while Mr. Putin is seeking support from Berlin and the European Union to help rebuild the country, said Stefan Meister of the German Council on Foreign Relations,” it was noted.
Bloomberg calls Putin-Merkel relations "a marriage" turned into a "convenience forged by Trump."

The Wall Street Journal says that the U.S. "could have a big say in the outcome" in the discussion over the controversial Russian-German gas pipeline, using sanctions to stop completion of the Nord Stream 2.
“Current and former U.S. officials said such sanctions had been discussed and could be mobilized in a matter of weeks, though they added that no action was imminent,” the agency states.

Politico went further and called the two - "odd couple" who find reasons to smile.
The agency noted that "Angela and Vladimir gave it another shot — with Donald watching from the wings."
"I believe that controversial topics can be solved through dialogue” Merkel said.
