Poltava Court dismisses Kernes' case

Kyiv District Court in Poltava ordered to close the criminal proceeding on Hennady Kernes, Kharkiv’s Mayor, and on his safeguards Vitaly Blinnyk and Yevgen Smitsky, as 112 Ukraine reports.
As the judge explained, the reason for such decision was the prosecutors’ refusal to support the prosecution on the case and participation in the trial debates which is considered as a refusal from the prosecution.
This decision can be appealed in the Court of Appeal within seven days.

Kernes himself stated that he did not commit the crimes mentioned in the court. Besides, he explained the decision with a regular absence of the prosecutors at the court sessions.
Answering the question if the accused is satisfied with such decision Kernes said: “Obviously, there will be an appeal, I think, that we will consider it in terms of the entire text. When we examine the whole text, we will say whether we are satisfied or not. I expected acquittal”.

Later, the representatives of the General Prosecutor’s Office informed about the intention to appeal against this decision.
Earlier this year, Kernes with accomplices was accused of kidnapping, torturing and threatening to kill Kharkiv EuroMaidan activists Oleksandr Kutyanin and Serhiy Ryapolov.
