In spite of the UN Security Council sanctions against North Korea, Russia has been issuing work permits for hundreds of citizens of the DPRK. The Wall Street Journal reported that on Thursday, referring to its own sources.
In September 2017, roughly 10,000 North Korean citizens were registered in Russia; according to the records of the Russian Ministry for Labor and Social Protection, about 700 new permits were issued in 2018.
A representative of U.S. Department of the State told WSJ that 'such actions of the Kremlin might violate the UN Security Council sanctions', which aim to cut the cash flow to North Korea from Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry did not react to the outlet's request to comment on the issue.
'North Korean workers who work in Russia send 150 to 300 million dollars to Pyongyang annually. It's time for Russia to act: Moscow should immediately and fully abide by all U.S. sanctions', the Department of the State representative said.
