Merkel first mentioned Medvedchuk's name regarding Minsk talks, - Parliament's Vice Speaker

The Verkhovna Rada

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel was the one who mentioned Viktor Medvedchuk, the Leader of the Ukrainian Choice movement, in terms of Minsk talks, as Iryna Gerashchenko, the First Vice Speaker of the Parliament and Ukraine’s representative at Minsk talks, said in the interview for Ukrainska Pravda.
“Medvedchuk’s surname was first mentioned during the phone negotiations in July 2014 between Angela Merkel and Poroshenko. She named this surname as the one who, she believes, could talk to Putin on issues. Apparently, she did it by Putin’s behest,” she said.

Gerashchenko added that Ukraine would “take all the opportunities to take our citizens out” of Russia.
“Certainly, we have to take into account people who have direct contact with Putin and ORDLO (Separated Districts of Donetsk and Luhansk region) representatives,” she noted.
Answering the question whether it is necessary to involve Medvedchuk into the talks when the President Poroshenko has direct contact with Putin, Gerashchenko said that some decisions were made without the participation of the Ukrainian President.

“Ukraine’s President has a phone contact with Putin to release the hostages, but there are “results”, Putin’s words. Like, for instance, when during the last phone talks it has been agreed twice that the Ombudsman will have access to the political prisoners and a humanitarian exchange will take place,” she said.
It should be noted that earlier, Viktor Medvedchuk, the Ukrainian envoy in the humanitarian subdivision of Minsk group, in the interview for said that Ukraine could exchange 174 prisoners for 43 Ukrainian captives militants keep.
