Prosecutor General removes Special Investigation Department

Yuriy Lutsenko, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, has removed the Department of Special Investigation, phasing out its Head Sergiy Horbatyuk.
As the
press] reports, on July 11, Lutsenko signed an order on the organizational changes in the structure and staff schedule in the General Prosecutor’s Office.
The order removes four independent units of the General Prosecutor’s Office, including the department on the investigation of priority cases in the economic sphere and the department of special investigations.

Instead, the Special Investigations Office was created as an independent unit with the same staff size the same-name office within the former Special Investigations Department.
The unit of the procedural direction of the special investigation is included as a separate unit of the Department of procedural direction in the criminal procedures under the control of the State Investigations Bureau.
Besides, two new units were created – the Office on the investigation of criminal proceedings in the economic sphere and the Office on the investigation of crimes committed by criminal organizations.

As Ukrainian News reported
, the General Prosecutor’s Office has phased out Sergiy Horbatyuk, former Head of the Department of Special Investigation.
“I am out of the staff. I mean, I am in the General Prosecutor’s Office, but there is no position of a “head of the Department of Special Investigation,” he said.
Horbatyuk noted that he was going to appeal against the actions of Lutsenko concerning the removal of the department.

In her turn, Larysa Sarhan, Lutsenko’s Spokesperson, told Ukrainska Pravda that those who hold the positions in the removed structures, will hold the same positions in the new ones.
Therefore, according to her, Horbatyuk will head the Department of Special Investigations.
