"For this, it is necessary to carry out certain activities, for example, by being present in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe," Merkel said.

She added that she wants to have "responsible relations with Russia" and therefore Germany "will continue to negotiate in the Russia-NATO Council."

In her speech, Merkel confirmed Germany's commitment to increase defense spending to 2% of GDP (now it is 1.24%).

We recall, Recently, Donald Trump criticized Germany for the low level of defense spending (in 2017, it was 1.24% of GDP, and in the previous year - 1.20%). At the NATO summit in Wales, NATO countries signed the obligation to spend 2% of GDP on defense, gradually raise military budgets. To achieve this goal, a period of 10 years has been set.
