Sushchenko's sentence is an “unprecedented show of cynicism”, - Poroshenko

Petro Poroshenko, the President of Ukraine, called the Moscow District court decision concerning the case on Roman Sushchenko an “unprecedented show of cynicism”, as
“The unprecedented cynicism of Russian “court”, who sentenced the Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko relying on preposterous charges, proves the fact that the Kremlin regime will stop at nothing trying to break the spirit of the Ukrainians,” he wrote.
At the same time, the President is convinced that Russia will be punished for the sentences for the Ukrainian political prisoners.

“Yet, I am convinced that Russia will definitely pay for its actions. The Kremlin shows a panic-driven fear with such sentences, admits its own aggression against Ukraine and sentence itself,” Poroshenko stressed.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry called this proceeding politically motivated.

“We express a protest against Russian concerning the illegal sentence to Sushchenko. It is a politically motivated case. We demand to release him,” Mariana Betsa, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, wrote on Twitter
The Moscow city court put Roman Sushchenko behind the bars for 12 years. The jury granted the motion of the prosecution and sentenced the Ukrainian for the alleged ‘espionage in favor of Ukraine’s Defence Ministry’.

The case against Sushchenko was carried out in camera, so the court announced only the preface and the conclusions of the sentence.
Roman Sushchenko was detained in Moscow in September 2016, when he arrived in Russia for a private visit. Russia’s federal security service accused him of spying, while being on an undercover mission for Ukraine’s military intelligence. The Ukrainian side denied this, calling Russia’s actions another politically motivated provocation. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry demands to release Sushchenko and the rest of Ukrainian political prisoners, illegally held in detention in Russia.
