Yesterday, on May 29 it was reported that Arkadiy Babchenko, a Russian journalist, was murdered in Kyiv. He was allegedly shot in his apartment. Ukraine’s police suggested that the murder of the journalist was connected with his professional activity. There were also reports on Russia’s connection.

Vasyl Hrytsak, the Head of SBU, at the briefing stated that the murder of Russian journalist Arkadiy Babchenko was ordered by Russian special forces. Ukrainian citizen was enlisted for that.
Arkadiy Babchenko is the Russian journalist, war-time correspondent and the writer. He served with the Russian regular army, surviving the combat action in both Chechen wars (the 1990s and 2000). Later, he prepared a number of reports during the armed conflict in South Ossetia in 2008. Since 2012, the Russian government has been prosecuting him for critical reports against the incumbent authority.

In 2017, he and his family left Russia due to constant threats. Since August 2017, he has lived in Kyiv, working as a TV host.
Russia reacted to the staged murder of Babchenko: the Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal investigation, Russia’s Foreign Ministry demanded that Ukraine conducts an on-the-spot investigation of the journalist’s murder. Later, Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, doubted Ukrainian jurisdiction.
