Since the annexation of Crimea in February 2014 and the Russian armed aggression in Donbas that followed, the fighting capacity of Ukraine's army has grown by 100,000 people, reaching the number of 255,000. Ukraine's defense minister Stepan Poltorak said that in his interview with Obozrevatel news agency.
'When the armed aggression began, the fighting capacity made 145-155,000 people. Now it's 255,000; that includes 250,000 serving with the Armed Forces, and another five thousand serving with the State Transport Service, which was turned over to the Defense Ministry's command', he said.
'We have practically switched to the professional army. Currently, only 20,000 of 250,000 servicemen are the conscripts; they are enlisted and trained as mobilization resource, they do not participate in military actions. The rest are those who signed the contract; they are the experienced fighters and they are ready for combat', the minister added.
In 2017, over 30,000 Ukrainian citizens signed the contract with the Armed Forces. Most of the candidates decided to stay and serve with the combat-ready units of the army.
