EU accuses Prosecutor General’s office of weakening Anti-corruption Bureau’s work

The spokesperson of the European Union External Action commented on the latest developments in the relations between the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine and the National Anti-corruption Bureau of the country, according to their statement.
“The public disclosure of a corruption investigation by the General Prosecutor Office significantly weakens the capacity of the National Anti-corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) to effectively conduct investigations and undermines public trust in an effective fight against corruption,” the statement reads.
The European Union External Action reiterated that Ukrainian authorities have to reinforce their efforts to ensure the independence, operational capacity and full effectiveness of the anti-corruption institutions.
As we reported earlier, a NABU officer was detained by the Prosecutor’s General for trying to bribe Dina Pimakhova, Deputy Head of State Migration Service. The NABU explained that their officer was working undercover trying to expose the corruption in the State Migration Service. The Security Service says they didn’t know about the operation, which is why they arrested the officer. Moreover, they say he shouldn’t have tried to give a bribe, as it’s illegal.
The NABU, however, believes it was an intentional diversion of their work by the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Security Service. They believe the Prosecution intentionally jeopardized their actions.
