Klimkin’s visit to Hungary: Summary

The education] recently passed by the Ukrainian parliament was the key topic, discussed during the visit of foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin to Hungary. According to the press center of Ukrainian foreign ministry, the official negotiated with his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijarto, clearing the air on the law, which evoked outrage of several neighboring countries.
According to the press service, the Ukrainian side clearly explained to Hungarian colleagues the essence of education reform; it also insisted that any concerns about rights of Hungarian community are groundless’.

Klimkin stressed that the document meets the international standards, adding that Ukraine passed the law for expertise in the Venice Commission – so as to lift any concerns.
‘Kyiv is ready for dialogue in terms of implementing the education reform in Ukraine and consultations about the language of study for the Hungarian national minority; Hungarian minister for human resources Zoltan Balog will visit Ukraine to discuss this issue on October 19, the press service went on.

Klimkin also expressed hope that Hungary will continue to support his country in the face of the Russian aggression. He thanked the Hungarian government for assistance in treating wounded Ukrainian soldiers and other kinds of neighborly assistance to Ukraine. The Ukrainian official and his Hungarian colleague also discussed issues of bilateral economic cooperation.  
Ukraine’s foreign minister met with representatives of the Ukrainian community in Hungary and laid flowers at the memorial of 1933 Holodomor victims.
