Guterres appointed new UN peacekeeping chiefUN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres extended the mandate of three top UN officials and appointed French diplomat Jean-Pierre Lacroix as UN peacekeeping chief while he undertook a major reform of the UN's peace and security operations, AP reported on Tuesday.

“I have announced that reforming the secretariat peace and security strategy, functioning and architecture would be a key priority,” Guterres, who took office in December, said in a statement.

"This important work will require both expertise and experience from principals and all staff members," he added.

Guterres said in a statement Tuesday he is extending the mandates of UN political chief Jeffrey Feltman, his deputy Oscar Fernandez-Taranco and the head of the UN's field support operations Atul Khare.

He said Lacroix, who currently heads the French Foreign Ministry's UN and international organizations department, will replace UN peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous who didn't want an extension after his contract expires on March 31.

Guterres said Lacroix's appointment and the three extensions will start on April 1 and last for one year.
