The Gambia to rejoin ICC, Commonwealth

The Gambia to rejoin ICC, CommonwealthGambian President Adama Barrow said the country is working on rejoining the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the Commonwealth.

The comment was made during the meeting with diplomats in the country at the Kairaba Beach Hotel on Tuesday.

President Barrow said The Gambia will be part of all international organisations and respect all protocols, “because these are partners that Gambia needs”, as The Gambia could not be isolated.

“If we are isolated, it will be very difficult for us to develop this country, and we are calling on everybody, the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU) and everybody to come on board to support this young democracy,” he said.

The EU commissioner for international cooperation and development, Neven Mimica, confirmed the development Thursday on Twitter after meeting President Adama Barrow. "Excellent news," Mimica said.

Also on Thursday Gambia said the mandate for a regional force that is securing the country has been extended by three months.
