Cyprus leaders want new UN summit in MarchThe leaders of two ethnically-split groups of Cyprus have asked the United Nations to prepare for a new peace conference in early March with guarantor powers, a UN envoy said on Wednesday.

Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders Nicos Anastasiades and Mustafa Akinci, who met earlier Wednesday, also agreed to meet weekly through the month of February to try to resolve outstanding issues, envoy Espen Barth Eide said in a statement.

The next leaders’ meeting will be held on February 9.

"The leaders requested the United Nations to prepare, in consultation with the guarantor powers, for the continuation of the Conference on Cyprus at political level in early March," he said.

According to a UN statement, the leaders took stock of developments since the Conference on Cyprus was convened in Geneva on January 12 and the subsequent session that was held at the level of deputies in Mont Pèlerin on 18-19 January.

“They underscored their strong resolve and determination to maintain the current momentum,” it said.
