U.S. to assist Ukraine in enhancing defense forces

U.S. to assist Ukraine in enhancing defense forcesThe United States and Ukraine will cooperate on defense technology and improve Ukraine's forces, the Pentagon said as the countries agreed on Thursday.

The partnership agreement was signed by U.S. Defense Secretary AshCarter and Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak during their meeting in London, where they also discussed the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The partnership aims "to enhance the defense capacity of Ukraine's forces, advance critical Ukrainian defense reforms, improve resource management processes and boost defense technology cooperation," the Pentagon said in a statement following the meeting.

Also a senior U.S. adviser would oversee the effort, Carter said. Carter named retired U.S. Army General John Abizaid, former head of U.S. Central Command, as a senior defense adviser to Ukraine to help Poltorak and other Ukrainian officials implement the reforms.

Carter said this was a role discussed with Mr. Poltorak previously. “He said he would welcome someone making suggestions to him,” Mr. Carter said.

Carter said that a “very, very important agreement” was made, so Ukraine could booster capabilities for defending its territory.
