Mexican police helicopter downed by gang

Mexican police helicopter downed by gangPolice helicopter was shot down in southwestern Mexico during the clash on Tuesday killing four people, gung members are suspected, Silvano Aureoles, the governor of the state of Michoacan, said.

The operation took place near the violent city of Apatzingan that has difficult land access, in Michoacan. It was aimed at detaining "leaders of criminal cells", the governor tweeted. It was not immediately clear which gang was responsible.

"During the operation, an official helicopter which was supporting the patrol in area of difficult access was shot down. We lament the death of the pilot, three police officers and a police officer who was injured," he said via Tweeter.

Aureoles also tweeted at first that criminals downed the aircraft. But in a later interview with Televisa, he said he "cannot confirm that it was taken down, or shot down.” So an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.

Michoacan is one of the most severe places of Mexico's drug war, where clashes between police and criminals occurred commonly. Last year, members of the Jalisco New Generation cartel, which also operates in the neighboring state of Jalisco, shot down an army helicopter, killing six soldiers.
