Iraq is trying to put out more oil well fires

Iraq is trying to put out more oil well firesIraq has put out the fire at six more oil wells, which were sparked by ISIS militants while retreating from Qayyara region. Three other wells still need to be extinguished, the Iraqi oil ministry said on Tuesday.

The militants sabotaged much of Qayyara's oil infrastructure before fleeing ahead of the government advance.

“The firefighting consisted of removing explosives from these wells, putting out the fires and preventing crude oil from leaking into the river to prevent pollution,” the ministry spokesman, Asim Jihad, told Reuters.

The firefighters also built dirt walls and trenches to prevent oil from reaching residential neighborhoods, he added.

“Upon calls from civil defense teams in Diyala and Salahadin provinces, we sent our firefighting teams to put out this huge fire, which has fully covered Qayyara town,” the official said.

Three wells still remain out of the security forces control and they will be extinguished only after recapture, Jihad told.

Still Iraq does not expect to resume production from the Qayyara region before security forces recapture Mosul, Islamic State's de facto capital in Iraq.
