Franz Beckenbauer under investigation over corruption

Franz Beckenbauer under investigation over corruptionFootball legend Franz Beckenbauer is under investigation for possible breach of trust and money laundering, Swiss prosecutors confirmed on Thursday.

In March FIFA started probing over six men for their part in Germany winning the rights to host the 2006 World Cup. And now Swiss prosecutors launched their own investigation, connected with that of FIFA.

Beckenbauer is a former vice-president of the German Football Association (DFB), president of the 2006 World Cup local organising committee (LOC) and former member of the FIFA executive committee.

The football legend, who headed Germany's bid, has denied corruption. Last October, he said he made a "mistake" in the bidding process to host the competition, but denied that votes were bought. Germany beat South Africa 12-11 in the vote, which took place in July 2000 and got the right to host the 2006 World Cup.

Switzerland's attorney-general is expected to release further details later on Thursday, while it is not known how many football officials are being investigated in Switzerland.

Beckenbauer, the winner of the World Cup both as a player and coach, has not yet commented on the news of the Swiss investigation, but has previously denied any wrongdoing.
