Boko Haram will be seized in a few weeks

Boko Haram will be seized in a few weeksBoko Haram’s last strongholds will be eliminated within next few weeks, Major General Lucky Irabor, commander in charge of crushing the jihadist group, said Wednesday.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari gave army a December 2015 deadline to wipe out the group, which forces missed. But army has already retaken most of the territory militants grabbed in order to set up an Islamic caliphate in the area around Lake Chad.

Irabor said the jihadists are now hidden in a few pockets of the Sambisa forest and two areas near Lake Chad and would be flushed out "within weeks".

Despite a big resistance, Boko Haram attacks places in Nigeria and neighboring Chad, Niger and Cameroon with suicide bombings.

"Almost all of the locations held by the Boko Haram terrorists have been reclaimed. We are talking only of a few villages and towns," Irabor said in an interview.

Nigeria's neighbors have also contributed to the success of military operations, especially Chad, whose forces have been attacking Boko Haram fighters fleeing across the border.

"There are joint operations. My commanders have an exchange with local commanders across the borders. Because of the collaborations we've had Boko Haram has been boxed in and in a few weeks you will hear good news," he said.

As Irabor said, the army had rescued nearly 20,000 people from Boko Haram, while other operations are still to come.
