Turkey sends more tanks to Syria to fight militants

Turkey sends more tanks to Syria to fight militantsNine Turkish tanks entered northern Syria on Thursday, expanding the operation to drive Islamic State from the border and stop Kurdish militants from seizing territory, Reuters reported Thursday.

There are now more than 20 tanks inside Syria, Turkish official confirms. Also additional tanks and equipment could be sent if necessary.

"We need construction machinery to open up roads ... and we may need more in the days ahead. We also have armored personnel carriers that could be used on the Syrian side. We may put them into service as needed," the official said.

The enforcement is a part of "Operation Euphrates Shield". During the operation Syrian rebels backed by Turkish Special Forces, tanks and warplanes on Wednesday entered Jarablus, one of Islamic State's last strongholds on the Turkish-Syrian border. The incursion is backed by U.S.

President Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday stressed the operation was targeting both Islamic State and the Kurdish YPG militia. As a result Islamic State had been driven out of the town and it was now controlled by the Syrian rebels.
