At least 20 people have died in floods that hit Skopje, the capital of Macedonia after torrential rains. Several people are still missing. Hundreds were evacuated from the dangerous zone.
Police and army helicopters are searching for the missing.

An emergency was declared in Skopje and certain parts of the northwestern city of Tetovo, where heavy storms caused property damage but no casualties.
"This is a disaster, we have never experienced such a thing," said Skopje's Mayor Koce Trajanovski, AFP reports.

Weather officials said the average rainfall for the whole of August fell on Skopje in the space of just two hours.
During the storm, cars were carried hundreds of meters into nearby fields, homes were flooded, and a large chunk of the ring road around the city was washed away.
