Air France cancels its flights because of strike

Air France cancels its flights because of strikeOn the sixth day of Air France cabin crew strike around 150,000 people have already been affected. Some 900 flights, or about one in five, have been cancelled since the action began on Wednesday.

On Monday Air France has warned about potential last-minute flight cancellations and delays due to the strike. This day the company has cancelled 5 percent of its long-distance flights, less than in previous days.

Air France plans to operate 80 percent of domestic flights and European flights to and from Paris Charles-de-Gaulle airport.

The cabin crew unions strike started on July 27 and is due to finish on August 2 in order to protest against further decreases in the number of crew members. This is a period of high traffic due to summer vacation.

Unions representing around half of the Air France strikers called the stoppage after marathon talks failed to reach a breakthrough on renewing a collective labour accord on rules, pay and promotions that expires in October.

The management wants to limit the extension of the agreement to 17 months, while unions are asking for between three and five years.

Air France has already suffered another strike, by pilot crew, during June 11-14, right at the start of Euro 2016 football championships. It costs for the company some 40 million euros.
