Man arrested over attack on woman, mother in Osaka condo

Police in Osaka have arrested a 31-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of attempted murder after he stabbed a 31-year-old woman and her 61-year-old mother in their 5th-floor apartment in Osaka on Sept 20.
Police said the suspect, Shigeto Suga, lives in an apartment on the second floor of the same building and that he has admitted breaking into the woman's apartment, Fuji TV reported. However, he was quoted by police as saying his motive was robbery and that he had no intent to kill anyone.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 3 a.m. last Friday in the condo in Nishi Ward. Police said they received a call from the woman, saying that a man had come into her apartment through a balcony window.
The intruder slashed the womans thigh and when her mother tried to stop him, he cut her right arm. He then fled from the apartment by going out onto the balcony. Nothing was stolen from the apartment.
The woman lives alone and her mother was visiting her for the night.
Police said Suga surfaced as a suspect after another apartment resident saw him shinny down from the 5th-floor balcony.
