The U.S. Council of Geographic Names Authorities made a decision to replace the spelling of the Ukrainian capital from “Kiev” to “Kyiv” in the international base as Ukraine’s Embassy to the U.S. reported on
Facebook“The U.S. Council of Geographic Names Authorities considered the appeal of Ukraine's Ambassador in the U.S. Valery Chaly and unanimously made a decision on the replace of the official name of the capital of Ukraine from “Kiev” to “Kyiv” on the international base”, the message said.

The proper changes will be made to the official bases of the U.S. Council on June 17.
“This decision is highly important and it gives impetus to change the official name of the capital of Ukraine outside the U.S., particularly, on the international flights at the foreign airports all over the world, as the international organization, including the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which refers to the official names from the base of the U.S. Council,” the embassy noted.
In October 2018, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine launched the online campaign dubbed #CorrectUA
, which urges the foreign media and airports to change the spelling of the capital of Ukraine from Kiev to Kyiv (#KyivNotKiev).

The list of international airports that changed the spelling includes Budapest, Tallinn, London, Gdansk, Batumi, Tbilisi, Bucharest, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Toronto, and Warsaw.
The Ukrainian authorities also suggest that international media use purely Ukrainian spelling for such cities as Kharkiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, and others, as well as "Ukraine instead of the widespread mistake, "the Ukraine."
