The negotiations on the new gas contract between Ukraine and Russia might resume only after the inauguration of new president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and his talks with Russia President Vladimir Putin, as Interfax-Ukraine reported citing Naftogaz-Ukraine Head Andriy Kobolev.
“The side has officially reported that it would talk only as our new president takes the office and the talk between Mr. Zelensky and Mr. Putin is going to take place. We expect this event. I think, possibly, these negotiations would resume in June,” he stated.
Kobolev noted that Germany will possess the key influence on the results of the negotiations as it may decide on such things as the launch of Nord Stream 2, further sanctions against Russia and capability of Naftogaz to continue the lawsuit against Gazprom on compensation in the sum of $12 billion in the case of the not signing of the new transit contract.

On January 1, 2020, the 10-years transit contract between Ukrainian Naftogaz and Russian Gazprom will end.
Naftogaz Ukraine CEO Andry Kobolev reported that Russia has begun the negotiations with Ukraine on the extension of the gas transit.
Besides, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that the European Commission is not able to block the construction of Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. She also emphasized that Ukraine should remain a transit state.

The inauguration of Volodymyr Zelensky is appointed on May 20.
