Jakarta has been hit by multiple explosions in an apparent “act of terror”

Jakarta has been hit by multiple explosions in an apparent “act of terror”Indonesia’s capital Jakarta was hit by an attack in the Sarinah neighborhood, according to local broadcasts. Initial reports suggesting multiple neighborhoods were hit have been retracted.

At a shopping center in the Sarinah area, a number of explosions occurred just before noon local time, followed by gunfire outside a Starbucks. A suicide bomber is believed to have been involved, a police spokesman said. Grenades were thrown at a small roadside police station near the shopping center. At least seven people died during the attack, according to local broadcasts, including four attackers, one police officer, and two civilians. Two other civilians were hit in the crossfire and are in a nearby hospital.

The explosions hit near a United Nations office.

It was quickly followed by five more explosions, and gunfire in the street, he said.

Other United Nations employees tweeted graphic photos of the aftermath of the explosion, including of several bodies lying in the street.

Indonesian president Joko Widodo called the attack an “act of terror.”

Last month Indonesian police thwarted terrorist attacks planned for the Christmas and New Year’s Eve period, arresting nine individuals with links to ISIL in raids across the nation’s main island of Java.

Starbucks issued a statement after the attack saying, “One customer sustained injuries and was treated on the scene; our partners (employees) are all confirmed to be safe. This store and all other Starbucks stores in Jakarta will remain closed, out of an abundance of caution, until further notice.”
