Ukraine’s MFA calls on Donbas citizens to refuse from Russian passports

Pavlo Klimkin, the Foreign Minister of Ukraine
Rzeczpospolita

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin called on inhabitants of the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk not to take the Russian passports. He urged to so after Putin’s decision on the simplification of the issuance of the Russian passports to citizens of occupied Donbas, as Klimkin wrote on Twitter.
“I call on the Ukrainian citizens on the occupied territories by Russia not to take Russians passports. Russia has deprived you of the present, but now it encroaches on your future,” Klimkin said.
According to the Minister, this simplification of the issuance of the Russian passports is the new step of occupation of Donbas.

“The decision of the Russian Federation on issuing the Russian passports on the Ukrainian passports is the continuation of the aggression and interfering in our interior affairs. It is the new ‘passport stage’ of the occupation of Donbas,” Klimkin added.

As it was reported, Russia wanted to facilitate the process of obtaining Russian citizenship for the residents of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics after presidential elections in Ukraine. Putin’s decree was required for that.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Temporarily Occupied Territories and IDPs reported that people who get Russian passports will lose their Ukrainian citizenship.
