U.S. prepares another sanctions package for Russia's interference in elections

The U.S. Senate intends to present a new draft law on deterrence Russia’s interference
in the elections to the Congress. The document provides sanctions in banking, energy and defence sectors and ban on operations with Russian state debt, as Reuters reported.
“The measure will be introduced by Senators Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat, and Marco Rubio, a Republican. They offered a similar measure last year, when it also had bipartisan support but was never brought up for a vote by the Senate's Republican leaders, who have close ties to President Donald Trump,” the news agency reads.

Those measures provided sanctions in the form of a ban on the opening of correspondent accounts in the U.S. by Russian financial institutions Sberbank, VTB Bank, Gazprombank, Vnesheconombank, and Rosselkhozbank.
“The sanctions would include blocking - freezing without seizing - any assets in the United States of those targeted for sanction, including senior Russian political figures and business leaders,” the message reads.

“According to details of the legislation seen by Reuters, it would require the U.S. Director of National Intelligence (DNI) to determine, within 30 days of any federal election, whether Russia or any other foreign government, or anyone acting as an agent of that government, had engaged in election interference,” it was added.
