Parents referred to prosecutors over death of baby left in bathtub

Police have referred a couple to prosecutors over the death of their 11-month-old daughter who was left alone in a bathtub at their home near Tokyo in 2017.
The 33-year-old father has told investigators he left the baby unattended because he "wanted time to play games," while his wife, 36, has said she did not say anything to him because she did not want to upset him, according to the police.
The police withheld their names as they were not arrested. The couple have admitted to the allegations of leaving the infant, wearing a neck float, in the bathtub for about 90 minutes on Jan 28, 2017 in Toda, Saitama Prefecture.
The girl, their second daughter, died from brain damage caused by lack of oxygen after she was dehydrated.
The couple, living separately after the incident, routinely bathed her for an hour or two without turning on a ventilation fan to make her sweat and lose weight, the police said.
