Mother charged with murder of newborn baby girl

A 24-year-old woman who was arrested in January on suspicion of abandoning the body of her newborn baby girl has also been charged with her murder.
Police said Yumi Jitsuhara, a part-time worker, has admitted to killing the infant and quoted her as saying she had no confidence she could take care of a baby, Fuji TV reported. She also told police she didn’t know who the father was and that she had started thinking about killing the baby when she found out she was pregnant in September.
Police said Jitsuhara told them she gave birth on Dec 8 while alone in her room in the share house in Higashi-Ikebukuro where she had been living for about three years. She placed tape over the infant’s nose and mouth, wrapped the corpse in a towel and placed it in a plastic bag in a closet.
Jitsuhara left the share house on Jan 19 after failing to pay her rent. One of the other occupants noticed a foul odor and found the baby’s remains in the closet.
Police arrested Jitsuhara on Jan 20 and initially charged her with abandoning a body but upgraded the charge to murder after Jitsuhara told them the baby was alive when born and that she had suffocated the child.
