Ukraine's Foreign Ministry explains why Google shows Crimea as Russian territory

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry explained why Google maps define the territorial affiliation of the occupied Crimea differently for Ukraine and for Russia due to that fact that the localized content of the resource falls within the jurisdiction of the relevant local legislation, UNN reported.
At the same time, this should not be perceived as the policy of Google Inc. towards the territorial affiliation of the temporarily occupied Crimea.

Ukraine’s Embassy in the U.S. has appealed to Google Inc. on the depiction of the peninsula on web maps on Google.ru/maps – it shows Crimea separated from Ukraine by a line used to display borders between the countries.
“The official position of Google Inc. in this regard which was sent to Ukraine’s Embassy in Ukraine, says that the localized content in Google maps, on https://www.google.com.ua/maps and https://www. google.ru/maps, in particular, is the subject of the jurisdiction of the relevant legislation (Ukrainian and Russian). Therefore, Crimea is depicted on the Ukrainian and Russian resources differently. At the same time, the representatives of the company stressed that the designation of Crimea on Google resources does not imply the policy of Google Inc. concerning the existing “disputes”,” the Justice Ministry informed.

Ukraine’s Embassy in the U.S. continues working with the company and American official party on provision of a correct display of Crimea’s territory in Google maps.
