forbes.comAmerican intelligence believes that the Russia-controlled group of hackers has launched its first attacks with Brexit, as Forbes reported.
“Known as Fancy Bear, the hackers have previously stolen files from the Democratic National Committee in the U.S. They often use recent events, like the October crash of a Lion Air 737 MAX plane off the coast of Indonesia, as lures for malicious documents that, when opened, infect the target computer,” the news agency reads.
According to a former FBI official, Howard Marshall, “prolific Russian crew, known as APT28 and Sofacy” are interested in Brexit.
As the news agency informs, Marshall said that “emails appeared to have been sent out to a number of contacts containing a document entitled Brexit 15.11.2018.docx.” These files are believed to contain information “related to the recent Brexit negotiations between the UK and the EU”.
“When opened, the Microsoft doc contained nothing of note. It was, instead, just a mixture of seemingly random characters. The recipient was encouraged to “enable macros” to turn the document into something legible” the message says.
