Over 80,000 apply to be volunteers at Tokyo 2020 Games

Organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics say they have received 81,035 applications for the games volunteer program, surpassing the recruitment target of 80,000.
There were 132,335 people who registered to become volunteers as of 9 a.m. Tuesday, with 81,035 completing the application process. Of the qualified applicants, 44 percent are non-Japanese citizens and around 60 percent are female.
While the minimum commitment is 10 days, 65 percent said they are willing to work for more than 11 days.
Online recruitment for volunteers started Sept 26 and closes 5 p.m. on Dec 21. Applicants must be aged 18 or older as of April 1, 2020, and must be either a Japanese national or a person with a valid visa permitting residence, including temporary visitors, in Japan during the volunteer period.
In addition to the "games volunteers" that provide personal, operational and media support, the Tokyo metropolitan government is recruiting "city volunteers" to assist tourists at places like train stations, airports and areas around the venues.
