Since Ukraine gained independence in 1991, over 1,100 law enforcers passed away while on duty. Serhiy Knyazev, the head of the National Police of Ukraine said that at a briefing where the officials came to pay tribute to Dmytro Kyrienko. He was the policeman shot dead during the recent shooting incident in Kharkiv on August 20.
'Over the years of independence, 1,108 law enforcers deceased, protecting rights and freedoms of citizens - so that the streets are peaceful, so that children can play safely, so that the society understands that the law enforcement system is the only reliable and irreplaceable authority, which provides the civil order and protects the constitutional order of the state. Quite regrettably, the daily struggle with crime leads to fatalities among the law enforcers', he said.

Those present at the briefing held a moment of silence for the deceased policeman Dmytro Kyrienko. He was wounded to the side of his body, among the plates of the body vest, where the armor is the weakest. Kyrienko's colleagues managed to neutralize the shooter, later adding that the attacker was drunk.
The police have been looking into the incident, during which the armed man opened fire not far from Kharkiv city council's building on early Monday.
